Are Grants and Loans
Promoters a
Scam?
|
|
You
must have seen ads of the government giving nearly a
trillion dollars a year in grants and loans. It is indeed
good to know that you are getting back some of your
taxes.
However, there many things you probably wouldn’t know. First
of all, that grants are handed out by many organizations, not
the government. You can get the money from them only if you can
prove what a fantastic idea you have, stating all the
nitty-gritty of the project.
You have to convince them with documentary details about the
specific goals and also show the results when the project is
completed. It’s very hard to find an organization that is
willing to give you money to consolidate your debt.
Moreover, many of these organizations and commercials are
scams and nothing more. They are waiting to loot you instead.
Others will make you pay through the nose for the services they
render. So much so that you feel you were better off without
the loan or grant given by the government.
Also, beware of the companies that claim to be with the
United States Department of Grants. They are frauds because
there isn’t one department. There are several federal agencies
that have grant programs, but there is not one department that
is in charge of them all.
In order to get a grant, you have to first submit a proposal
to a federal agency describing what you are going to do with
the money. Secondly, you may have to hire a grant writer to
write a grant and you. Thirdly, you will have to wait a long
time for the agency to approve or deny your request.
Finally, if you are approved then you have to give a
quarterly report describing how you are spending the money and
what you are spending it on. Basically, you have to fill a
mountain of forms before you see the color of money.
On the Internet and in classified newspapers, you see all
sorts of advertisements stating that they can get you a grant
for a fee, because they claim, ‘Free Grants Never Repay.’ They
guarantee acceptance of your application for grant.
Now, if you get taken in by such an ad and call them, you
will be asked a variety of questions by a company
representative. Then they tell you that you are eligible and
that you have to pay a fee to get the information from
them.
If you pay the fee you get a package with an application. In
case you are denied a grant by all of the agencies within 90
days, you will get a refund of the fee. This is next to
impossible. All you get in return is the name of a grant source
and the application sent to you in the mail. In some cases, you
may never even receive the application or the source and the
company just disappears.
You must know that grantors don’t give you money for
personal needs. They want to see their money serve your
community or the country in some way. For instances, colleges
receive grants for research and sometimes it is difficult for
them also to get past the cumbersome procedure.
